Imagine, if you please, a Europe that has a striking resemblance to ours, but magic and all manner of paranormal creatures are real—everyone knows it, but not everyone is necessarily kenning.

Middle-aged witch Tilly Reinicke tries her very, grumpy best to guide, cajole, bespell, and reason with her new, non-magical neighbours, the Bells, so they might respect and work with—not against—the natural and paranormal world around them as they remodel their new plot of land. Success is critically important, because the beings the Bells are affronting do not suffer dismissal or disrespect.

With no side willing to budge, violent retaliation seems unavoidable as the darkest day of the year draws ever nearer. The task looms large, but Tilly is not alone—she has her garden, her craft, her community, and most of all her dead but far-from-gone wife, Ralda.
